Allein stehender Kirchturm in Parpan

Allein stehender Kirchturm in Parpan, Parpan

The church tower of Parpan stands confidently on a hill - completely detached from the church, which lies a good 30 metres away.

That is unique in Switzerland. But why is that? And why does the tower have openings that look like embrasures? As clear and self-confident as the tower is, it still poses a mystery. Experts assume that the tower was once used as a watchtower and a church tower at the same time. The tower was finally built in 1633 - during the time of the so-called Bündner Wirren, the regional repercussions of the Thirty Years' War raging throughout Europe. What is certain is that today's church is almost 150 years older than the tower. And unlike the tower, it does not pose a riddle: The church is clearly Reformed: After all, the four reformers Martin Luther, Johannes Calvin, Ulrich Zwingli and Heinrich Bullinger can be seen on stained glass windows from 1916.
