Museum Langmatt
Museum Langmatt, Baden
One of the most important private collections of French Impressionism in Europe, embedded in historic living spaces. In the last year before the renovation-related closure in 2024-25, the Langmatt once again pulls out all the stops.
The Museum Langmatt is unique in the Swiss museum landscape. The Art Nouveau villa of the industrialist couple Sidney and Jenny Brown-Sulzer houses an exquisite art collection of French Impressionists. It was assembled at the beginning of the 20th century. The unmistakable charm of the villa lies in the presentation of outstanding pictures of art history in historic living spaces.
The Brown family resided in the Baden Villa for two generations. In 1987, its last resident, Dr. John A. Brown, passed away. In accordance with his wishes, the City of Baden, as universal heir, established the "Langmatt Sidney and Jenny Brown Foundation" and opened the house to the public in 1990 as an Impressionist and residential museum. Today, the mansion, which has been preserved in its original furnishings, is a listed building.
The Langmatt's collection of paintings includes an impressive Impressionist collection. Starting with Corot and Boudin, the holdings range from Degas, Monet, Renoir, Pissarro and Sisley to Cézanne and Gauguin. In addition, there are individual works by Courbet, Fantin-Latour, Redon, Bonnard and the American Mary Cassatt, who worked in France. French furniture from the 18th century, clocks, chandeliers, carpets, porcelain, silver, as well as Chinese ceramics create a lively atmosphere in the villa. A Steinway concert grand piano in the library is a reminder that many musicians came and went here - a tradition that continues today with musical events.
Since its opening, the house has been run as an open venue for cultural activities. This includes a rich offering of multilingual guided tours, art education workshops, events, special exhibitions and publications. The exhibitions usually tie in with the museum's art holdings, focus on individual works or groups of works, and establish references to works by contemporary artists. In addition to the exhibitions, the museum presents a diverse, imaginative program of events, which offers a low-threshold program for all ages in the park and the house.
In the last year before the renovation-related closure in 2024-25, the Langmatt once again pulls out all the stops. No less than 9 larger and smaller exhibitions with a wide range of themes show refreshing references to the historical setting and shake up visual habits and expectations with bold contrasts. Various parts of the collection enter into unexpected contexts and can be experienced in a new way. The important Impressionist collection takes center stage, as do inspired contemporary positions. Once again, the Langmatt surprises as a changeable chamber of wonders and invites to diverse discoveries.
