In 1720, the castle, first mentioned in 1175, was transformed into a baroque country residence. Privately owned until 1934, Jegenstorf Castle today houses the Museum of Bernese Residential Culture.

The period rooms display elegant furnishings of bourgeois and patrician households ranging from the 17th to 19th centuries from the area of the city and republic of Bern. The collection focuses on valuable furniture from the Ebenist workshops of Funk, Äbersold and Hopfengärtner as well as paintings, clocks and tiled stoves from the same period. Jegenstorf Castle houses the largest collection of Bernese portraits publicly accessible.

In it's long history the castle experience multiple changes and refurbishements as well as varying occupants. One of the most prominent was General Guisan in 1944/45, who moved the command post of the Swiss Army to Jegenstorf Castle. Additional memorial rooms commemorate the Bernese writer Rudolf von Tavel and the pedagogue and economist Philipp Emanuel von Fellenberg, who was a renowned figure throughout Europe and founded the Hofwyl Seminary at the beginning of the 19th century. The secluded park features majestic old trees, a pond and fountains, offering space for leisurely walks and relaxation all year round.
