St. Nicolaus Group Unteraegeri

Unterägeri

In memory of the holy bishop Nicolaus of Myra we worship St. Nicolaus-Day every year on 6th December.
Our group visits children at home, playgroups, kindergardens and schoolclasses after registration.

This custom is known since the 13th century. Until reformation the 'bishop of children' was the only person to deliver gifts to the children (fruits and nuts).
St. Nicolaus is often accompanied by two dark men called 'Schmutzli'.
Nicolaus talks with the children, praises them but also asks them, what they could do better. At the end he listens to any poetry or music the children had learned and gives the children a present (which was prepared by the parents and hidden in the letter box or outside the front door. The presents mostly contain nuts, chocolates and mandarines).
Our group believes that this custom must be maintained.

Registration forms can be found online or in selected shops in Unteraegeri. It is also possible to register directly online.

Date

On the first advent the 'Chlausauszug' takes place. Nicolaus comes to the children at the Pfarrkirche in Unteraegeri at five o'clock in the evening to tell them a story. After a short parade through town to the Marienkirche he gives the children a 'Gritibänz'.

The visits itself take place between 04th and 08th December.

Price

For our visits we receive a voluntary donation from the families and schools. With this money we finance and maintain our precious material. Also we donate money to families in need in our valley.
