Archaeology / Prehistoric history

A journey into the past

Museum für Urgeschichte(n), Zug

The permanent exhibition at the Museum of Prehistory presents archaeological finds from Canton Zug.

The permanent exhibition at the Museum of Prehistory in Zug presents archaeological finds from Canton Zug dating from the Early Stone Age to the Early Middle Ages. The main focus of the collection, which is of national importance, is on the pile-dwelling period. The exhibits consist of finds from three UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Late Bronze Age settlement at Zug-Sumpf, and other highlights such as the Late Stone Age double axe from Cham-Eslen. The Roman period is represented by outstanding exhibits, including timber construction elements of a mill and clay figurines from a sanctuary at Cham-Hagendorn.
Scenes and life-sized figures as well as models and stories ensure that the museum is particularly exciting and interesting for families and schools and the everyday lives of people from the past are vividly brought to life. Schools can avail of craft rooms and an extensive collection of educational materials. The special events are particularly popular. They include Sunday events for the whole family, workshops for those interested in crafts and a wide range of guided tours, tailor-made programmes for children and kids’ birthday parties, all of which give people of all ages an authentic taste of prehistory.
