"Bike route": Rankweil - St. Peterzell

This tour is a cycling variant for one of the Way of St. James routes in Switzerland.

This section of the Swiss Way of St. James connects the starting point Rankweil in Vorarlberg with St. Peterzell on the Vorarlberg-Appenzell route. First, the path leads us through the flat St. Gallen Rhine valley, then ascends into the Appenzell region. Via Innerrhoden (Appenzell) and Ausserrhoden (Urnäsch) we reach St. Peterzell, which then belongs again to the canton of St. Gallen.

After crossing the Rhine, we turn right and follow bike route 9 through Oberriet. Outside Oberriet, turn left and ride to Kobelwies to join bike route 99. On this route, also called the Heart Route, it goes on to Eggerstanden. Appenzell is definitely worth enjoying a bit. This might somewhat compensate for the particularly steep stretches following Urnäsch (250 meters of elevation with up to 16% incline). Scenic beauties and beautiful, historic architectural style characterize this section of the Way of St. James.
