The conference brings together scholars reflecting on architectures expressing national, cultural and personal identities through the notion of character, in the period 1700-1900.

The international conference "Building Identities: Character in Architecture and Beyond" is the final conference of the project ‘Building Identity: Character in Architectural Debate and Design 1750-1850’ (2022-2026), funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and based at the Chair for the History and Theory of Architecture, (Prof. Dr. Maarten Delbeke) at the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta), ETH Zurich. The conference brings together scholars reflecting on architectures expressing national, cultural and personal identities through the notion of character, in the period 1700-1900. The programme includes keynote lectures, paper presentations, and roundtable discussions.
